Activated Carbon FAQ

Great Lakes Carbon Treatment, Inc. offers the following information to answer some of the common questions about activated carbon.

What is activated carbon?
Simply put, it is a porous material made from carbonaceous raw materials, such as coal, coconut shells, wood, peat, and others. When activated under very specific conditions and processes, the material develops a large internal surface porosity and casts the surface area.

What type of carbon does GLCT handle?
We can provide activated carbon products for virtually any application. Our specialties are coal and coconut based products well suited for environmental, industrial and municipal water, wastewater, and air filtration or treatment. We also custom batch specially impregnated carbon products for specific applications, as well as supplying other specialty filtration media products to compliment our activated carbon products.

What about reactivated or regenerated carbon?
Reactivated carbon is used carbon, processed under specific conditions to remove the contaminants that were absorbed in prior use. As some of the physical structure is lost during the process, the carbon loses a percentage of its original pore structure, thereby reducing its overall efficiency.

We start with virgin grade. GLCT utilizes virgin grade activated carbon in our treatment systems for change out services. Some clients do not specify their desire for reactivated carbon, but we are happy to provide these products upon specific request. Our reactivated carbon products are produced under strict controls to ensure the highest quality product possible.
